Abstract
This capstone explores the experience of parenthood ambivalence, the state in which one is experiencing conflicting feelings about becoming a parent. This capstone project aims to destigmatize ambivalence and equips counsellors with culturally and ethically supportive interventions. Through a comprehensive literature review, three connected themes emerged: ambiguity surrounding grief and loss associated with parenthood ambivalence, relational security's connection to parenthood decision-making, and the significance of meaning-making and authenticity during ambivalence. Interventions have been explored based off of the theoretical frameworks of ambiguous loss theory, attachment theory, existential theory, narrative therapy, emotion-focused therapy, and grief counselling. This capstone aims to validate parenthood ambivalence as a legitimate chapter of identity exploration and avoid pathologization. Future research recommendations have been suggested, highlighting more diverse population inclusion and increased longitudinal studies. This capstone works to empower counsellors to support their clients through decision-making with empathy, compassion and authenticity.
