Abstract

This master's project discusses the ways that contemporary art museums in the United States can better acquire, document and preserve performance art. I conducted a literature review, fourteen interviews and four case studies with professionals involved in the documentation and preservation of live performance. Through the literature review, interviews and case studies, I discuss their methods and proposed ideas on this topic. Because I use some terms that may be unfamiliar to the reader, a short glossary follows. By conducting my research I propose better practice guidelines to contemporary art museums that in turn, I believe, can help in the process of documentation and preservation of newly acquired performance art works these institutions add to their permanent collections. My recommendations which form the last chapter of this masters project do not advocate a standard way to collect performance art, but instead focus on developing the best practice that can work for all institutions.
