Abstract
The United States' population is aging (Littman, 1998; McPherson, 1984). According to Littman (1998), in 1995 the median age for the United States population was 34.3 years old and is predicted to increase to 38.5 by the year 2030. Research has shown that participation in sport and exercise declines with increasing age (Buckworth, 2000; Dishman & Buckworth, 2001; Duda & Tappe, 1988; Littman, 1998; McPherson, 1984). Minimal research has been conducted on the motivations of adult recreational athletes. Most research on motivation targets youth, collegiate, and older athletes, as well as elite athletes, leaving a gap in the research concerning recreational athletes that fall in between these groups.
