Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the difference between women's fathers and husbands and then to relate this comparison to the women's marital satisfaction. The goal was to determine how and in what ways the woman's father influenced her choice of marital partner and her marriage. Thirty-one women described their fathers, husbands, and marital satisfaction on separate questionnaires. It was found that fathers did influence the woman's choice of marital partner and marriage. Women who perceived their fathers as dominant and loving with low intensity described their marriages in more positive terms. Women married to men who seem different from their fathers reported a higher level of marital distress. Women who perceived their husbands as having low-intensity dominant and loving characteristics also described less marital distress. Women may benefit by exploring their childhood relationships with their fathers and relating this to their present situations with the intimate and important males in their lives.
