Abstract

The intention of this case review was to determine the best forensic deception detection tool. Discerning a lie from the truth is one of law enforcement’s most challenging tasks. This review discusses the polygraph and voice stress analysis technology physiological responses for comparison of accuracy and cost. The government memorandum, Scientific Validity of Polygraph Testing (1983), was conducted by federal agencies to determine the accuracy of polygraph examinations. This review also evaluates voice stress analysis technology data from Assessing of Validity of Voice Stress Analysis Tools in a Jail Setting (2007) by questioning inmates about recent drug use. While both tools showed a substantial degree of accuracy, the polygraph proved higher than the voice stress analysis. The cost/accuracy ratio results showed the voice stress analysis to be more accurate per dollar than the polygraph.
