Abstract

The objective of this qualitative study was to develop a rich, in-depth understanding of individuals' experiences of being raised with a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder. Semistructured interviews with 9 participants were analyzed using conventional content analysis. The participants' responses fell into nine categories, with several subcategories identified within each category. The findings suggested that the participants commonly experienced feelings of confusion, anxiety, guilt, and resentment derived from their sense of responsibility and parental high expectations while growing up. However, they also commonly reported feeling close to their parents and siblings and, as adults, expressed willingness to care for their siblings in the future. These findings are discussed in relation to the existing literature, and possible directions for future research in this area are presented.
