Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the increasing threat to the United States posed by International and domestic internet identity theft cases and how the United States has historically attempted and is currently attempting to gain control of it. The paper will provide a brief outlook on what identity theft is by providing a Nigerian enterprise sample, the steps that law enforcement currently uses to identify and prevent these crimes, laws or treaties that have been enacted to assist in charges for these crimes, and an example of an international theft crime which resulted in charges brought against international perpetrators due to international cooperation. The research for this paper will be provided by information from the Internet Crime Complaint Center, Department of Justice Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Unit, Office of International Affairs, and records of international treaties.
