Abstract

This qualitative study is an original research project that draws on different theories to create a comprehensive approach to teach writing to First Grade ESL (English as a Second Language) students. The 'subjects of this study were thirteen First Grade ESL students, aged five to seven. Native countries represented include Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Tonga, Guatemala, and the Phillipines. Samples of three students' writing are highlighted. Authentic daily writing samples were analyzed by noting the student's progress as he/she moved through Gentry's five stages of writing development (Spells a Four-Letter Word, 1987). These samples chronicle the student's daily writing development as it progresses throughout the year. This is a one year study with one year preparation. Writing samples from Kindergarten and First Grade were used for the seven students that were in the teacher's class for two consecutive years.
