Abstract
Since the birth of this nation, many volumes have been written about the bravery of American men in combat, but relatively little has been recorded about the courage of American women in war time. Traditionally, the portrayal of women at war has been the classic one: a woman's duty is to wait passively for her man to return from the front. While these passive women certainly existed, they were not representative of all American women. A great many women took quite active roles in war time, but because of the universal preoccupation with men 's courage in battle, women's war time endeavors remain comparatively unknown. To bridge this gap, the Presidio Army Museum in San Francisco plans an exhibition titled American Women at War, which will open in mid-1982. This exhibition will highlight the contributions of American women during our wars, and will include uniforms, insignia, photographs, decorations, and miscellaneous memorabilia. This study is undertaken to provide background material for that exhibition, and it consists of three parts.
