Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the role that romantic relationships play in student-athletes' performance. Both of these aspects of an athlete's life are complex; relationships affect sport performance and sport performance affects relationships. Seven student-athletes from five four-year universities throughout California participated in the study. The student-athletes shared their experiences about their perceived athletic performance as well as their involvement in their romantic relationship through a formal semi-structured interview process. The researcher analyzed the data using conventional content analysis which lead to her findings such as how significant others' support positively affected the athletes' performances. Significant others' support was prevalent in the findings and played an important role in the athletes' performances through their knowledge of the athletes' sports, supporting the athletes' priorities, attending games and providing comfort. It is important to understand the complexity of romantic relationships and any effect they may have on athletes' sport performance. It is imperative for those working with collegiate athletes to be mindful of the various characteristics of romantic relationships and how such relationships can positively or negatively affect sport performance.
