Abstract

This paper proposes a set of guidelines to help fitness professionals adopt a more holistic approach when working with their clients. The recent history of health and healing as well as an overview of the principles of holistic health are introduced. This is followed by a discussion of the limitations of the current and dominant approach to fitness and personal training. Fitness, from a holistic view is the sum of many factors, including exercise, stress level, diet, rest, and a life whose elements are in harmony with each other. These guidelines provide tools and examples for creating more individualized programs to help individuals achieve balance and overall wellness for the body, mind and spirit.
