Abstract

Insomnia is a risk factor for the development of mental disorders and suicidality. This capstone explores why the relationship between insomnia and suicide exists and highlights the importance of treating insomnia effectively to prevent the development of depression, anxiety, and PTSD which all increase the risk of suicide. Research suggests that when insomnia presents alongside other mental disorders, treating it independently can improve symptoms and in some cases, lead to full or partial remission of the comorbid disorder. Insomnia is considered a modifiable risk factor for suicide and increasing awareness of this relationship, as well as options for treatment, is crucial for both mental health professionals and physicians. This capstone outlines current theories explaining the insomnia--suicide link, why insomnia care must be re-evaluated, and how to effectively treat insomnia with CBT-i.
