dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to explore the use of temporary installations of public art as an alternative or in addition to permanent installations in public art programs. At six selected public art agencies interviews were held with public art administrators and artists, and temporary installation projects were analyzed in order to better understand how to utilize temporary installations in solving problems of community support, placement, and unchangeability posed by permanent installations of public art. The results of the study appear to indicate that temporary installations of public art provide an opportunity for artists and public art administrators to explore public art ideas without the pressures of the artwork being permanent. Likewise, temporary installations encourage discussion between public art agencies and the public about the role of public art in their community. Recommendations for utilizing temporary installations of public art focus on agencies incorporating temporary installations into their public art programming and increasing the effectiveness of temporary installations during their implementation.
