Abstract
The subject of this thesis is a survey of the theory and practice of exhibits in contemporary American museums. Part I covers the purpose and function of exhibits, including the historical development of the exhibit, basic elements of design and the development of different types of exhibits, the position of the exhibit in the over5 all museum program, and possible methods to evaluthe effectiveness of exhibits. Part II is the practical application of these exhibit theories and practices to the actuality of a gallery exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences, "Pen's Natural Heritage", which was on view from June to October, 1978.
