Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide useful information to anyone who wants to bring sobriety into their lives by describing some of the available resources that have had success in helping people attain that goal. The paper will streamline many of the popular resources into summaries that will outline various approaches so that a reader can choose an appropriate method for his or her active recovery. To facilitate a person's understanding of the decision to seek a sober lifestyle, the treatise will discuss four things: (1) the mindset of the individual who makes the choice to seek sobriety; (2) aspects of the commitment that relate to the decision to pursue a sober lifestyle; (3) some of the options in terms of recovery programs; and how to maintain a sober state as the individual progresses with his or her recovery. The material will discuss the relationship to chemical dependency with respect to factors like social dynamics, personal background, and belief systems before detailing the characteristics of four popular recovery programs: Alcoholics Anonymous, LifeRing, Narcotics Anonymous, and Refuge Recovery. The four methods all have their own success stories, challenges, and failures. The factors that might make one method superior to another relative to a specific individual's case, circumstances, and belief system will show that chemical dependency is powerful, but recovery is possible. This paper will convey the experience of coming to the conclusion to seek sobriety, what resources are available, and, finally, which method might be the best point of access to a stable recovery from chemical dependency.
