Abstract
Dealing with the human impact of downsizing is a particularly difficult challenge for companies. Therefore, this paper will discuss 1) the downsizing phenomenon, 2) the effects of downsizing upon the company and its remaining employees and 3) some tools that managers, human resource personnel, consultants and downsizing survivors can use to ease the trauma of downsizing while assisting employees in understanding and adapting to the new rules of jobs and careers. This thesis suggests the necessity for companies to take into account more the human side of downsizing and utilizes a qualitative study to generate in-depth information as a result of interviews based upon the impact of organizational downsizing. The subsequent discussion offers recommendations for improvement in how the process is communicated with employees.
