Abstract

The purpose of this study was to create a comprehensive reference source on non-damaging upholstery conservation for conservators studying or practicing upholstered furniture conservation treatments. The resource book includes an analysis of the ethics and philosophy underlying non-damaging techniques, a review of current methods of treatment, an annotated bibliography on non-damaging techniques published since 1980, and a furniture conservation bibliography. By providing a comprehensive resource, the guide will support communication among practitioners. The analysis of ethics and philosophy will acquaint furniture conservators and conservators who are not specialists in furniture with current issues in the field. The review of methods will aid conservators in choosing among appropriate treatment options. The bibliographies will aid study and comparison of conservation treatments and research into history and connoisseurship.
