Abstract

This thesis addresses a number of factors and issues that affect women's relationship with money. Many women's perception of, and behavior toward, money is a reflection of how they see themselves. Questionnaires and group discussions supported the hypothesis that some women's "money attitudes" and behavior are influenced by an interplay of social factors, family messages, sex role stereotypes, and lack of financial training. In addition, some women's mathematical ability, as well as their feelings and socialization toward the subject, affect their ability to deal with money. This was not explored fully in this pilot study, but would be fertile ground for further research. Recommendations are made for goal setting and concrete money management tasks.
