Abstract
The purpose of this study was to show how a travelling exhibit database could benefit future planning and preparation of exhibits in art museums.
A national survey was conducted to compare existing computer travelling exhibit databases. The results of the survey indicated that museum loan activity is high throughout the U.S. with large and medium-sized art museums using computers more than small museums. Documenting travelling exhibits requires a large number of staff members. Reports are quite numerous and standard in form. Microcomputers and a diverse selection of software are employed.
A needs assessment was made of manual travelling exhibit documentation at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This study of the Fine Arts Museums (FAM) suggested several options. The FAM can use existing equipment with a Local Area Network or they can add software or additional hardware. The Data Dictionary defined in this study has begun the planning process. Recommendations include: limiting travelling exhibit computer use to essential repetitive tasks and reports to keep costs under control; planning a system with clear objectives and strong leadership; providing data definition, software and hardware research and data backup.
