Abstract

The present study examines the role that theoretical orientation plays for members of the counselling profession. The current body of literature related to choosing a theoretical orientation explores how worldview, personality, education, supervision, dissonance, rigidity, and development through experience can affect this choice. Smith and Osbornā€˜s (2004) Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis, a qualitative method, was used for data collection and analysis in the exploration this field. Nine themes emerged from the analysis that depict various factors that contribute the role theoretical orientation selection has in the counselling profession. From the results, recommendations were made for further research that may shed some light on new ways of working towards the development of novice counsellors.
