Abstract

This paper presents a holistic model for nutrition geared towards educating health professionals and parents about nourishing the whole child. Children's eating habits and opinions about nutrition form early and stay with them for life. As a child's main caretaker, parents are responsible for daily nutrition and the development of these eating habits. If poor nutrition practices form early on, children are at a greater risk for nutrition-related problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, depression, and type II diabetes (Lipski, 2006, p. 2). Therefore, healthy family nutrition in the home is critical for the development of successful eating habits. A holistic approach to nutrition is the best way to develop these habits because it not only involves healthy food but also provides an opportunity to nourish the body, mind, and spirit. These holistic nourishment practices include body awareness, food quality, family mealtime rituals, and a connection to the global environment.
