Abstract

Autoerotic asphyxiation reportedly kills approximately 1000 people a year in the United States alone. This number may be a gross misrepresentation of the true facts and statistics. Sexual acts are seen as taboo and possibly hidden from public knowledge. This secrecy seems to have a substantial negative effect on the accurate reporting of autoerotic fatalities. The lack of reporting and factual information being circulated is causing this sexual action to become a rising fatal problem in our society. This research paper will show that there is a lack of factual information circulating throughout our society regarding autoerotic asphyxiation fatalities. The lack of true case representation and factual information has lead and is currently leading to a growing dilemma of abnormal deaths. The spread of truth and disproval of myths about a seemingly taboo, yet common sexual activity may help to decrease the number of loved ones who are falling victim to this activity.
