This study examined the question, "Do Asian Americans' cultural identities influence their experiences as members of the Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submissive, Sadism & Masochism (BDSM) community?” Eleven self-identified Asian-American participants, age 18 years or older, who are part of the BDSM community, were interviewed regarding their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis. The results indicated that discussion with families regarding sexuality was sporadic, informal, or incidental and led to negative reactions, such as shame and fear. These, in turn, led to hiding their BDSM sexual identity. The development of their BDSM sexual identity was either intrinsically motivated or motivated by external factors. Upon connecting with the BDSM community, subjects found acceptance. Furthermore, participants indicated that once their Asian American identity and their BDSM identity were accepted, they gained a more positive sense of self. However, many participants perceived racial discrimination and objectification within the BDSM community due to their Asian American identity. The relationship of the findings in literature on Asian-American sexuality and the clinical implications of the findings are discussed.
