Abstract
This study was designed to assess if the increased use of Internet pornography has had any affect on the number of rapes within the United States. Three consecutive years (2004 to 2006) of data were collected from Google search engine queries and national crime statistics. The data were separated geographically to identify possible correlations or trends. Results indicate that nationally during the three year period there was a 7.81% increase in the number of “porn” searches while the number or rapes committed during the same time period decreased by 3.11%. However, further testing revealed that when the data were compared geographically there was no correlation. For example, Missouri’s number of rapes increased by 17.5% while the number of “porn” searches also increased. Conversely Montana’s rape rate fell by 3.39% while the number of “porn” searches decreased. In other words, the variables had no correlation and were simply random.
