Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the elements in planning, designing and presenting an exhibition on cultures other than the Anglo-Saxon American in a children's museum that would provide a non-prejudicial, non-ethnocentric introduction for children six to eight years old. A survey was conducted of children's museums in the United States to determine which museums had exhibitions focusing on cultures other than non-Anglo-Saxon American. From the results of the survey, five museums were chosen for case studies. The Capital Children's Museum, The Please Touch Museum, The Muncie Children's Museum, The Cobb County Youth Museum, and The Boston Children's Museum were chosen to assess the elements of the cultural exhibition that each museum used and the reactions of the six to eight year old visitors in the cultural exhibitions. The results of this study enabled the researcher to recommend several successful elements to consider when mounting exhibitions that focus on cultures other than the Anglo-Saxon American. These elements are found in the planning stage, the exhibition design phase and the exhibition interpretation phase.
