Abstract

The intent of this thesis is to explore these obstacles and their origins. The project will provide an analysis of how one group of Arabs - four Lebanese families - are coping with their children's assimilation into the American culture. This information is given in the context of the academic performance of four Lebanese students in four different American schools. Furthermore, the study will use qualitative and quantitative techniques to investigate Lebanese students' motivation for learning English as a Foreign Language. The conclusions of my analysis show a strong correlation between first generation Lebanese-American students' cultural identity and academic achievement. Furthermore, the process of assimilation is more evident with the four students than it is with their parents.
