Abstract

This master's project examines how museums on the island of Oahu, Hawai'i engage local communities, despite existing and operating in an area of high cultural tourism. Additionally, this master's project also investigates the depth and sustainability of relationships between local communities, Oahu's museums, and tourism authorities - particularly how those relationships have evolved over time and currently manifest themselves in present day. The goals of this project are to define and explore relationships between the three main stakeholders (local communities, Oahu's museums and museum professionals, and tourism authorities), and recommend ways in which those stakeholders can communicate more effectively and build longer term, more sustainable relationships in the interest of the common goal of interpreting and sharing the uniquely authentic multicultural histories of Hawai'i.
