Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the motivational factors which influence competitive junior tennis players to continue participation in the sport of tennis. The subjects were 60 male and female ranked junior tennis players, ages 12-18, competing in the Northern California Sectionals Tennis Tournament. A questionnaire, designed specifically for this study, was distributed randomly to subjects at the 3 tennis sites. The data suggest intrinsic motivation, skill mastery, and ego & task orientation are important motivational factors influencing these players to continue their participation in competitive tennis. The findings also conclude parental influence and acknowledgment of achievements are important determinants in continued participation in the sport arena.
