Abstract

The purpose of this study is to unravel the mystery that has surrounded a lesser-known work of art, Christ Healing the Sick in the Temple, by Benjamin West It is probably the most enigmatic painting in the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and one that the noted art historian and critic Alfred Frankenstein has named one of the strangest paintings of the eighteenth century. So little information has heretofore been gathered about this strangely romantic painting that it has been possible to only speculate about the true reason for its style. The study calling upon a wide range of investigative methods--visual P and literary, scientific and intuitive--is intended to help authenticate its authorship and to establish its true aesthic significance.
