Abstract

The purpose of this project is to investigate the state of awareness, practice, and implementation of environmentally sustainable materials utilized in collections management and to make those findings available to the museum community. To achieve these goals, I sought to determine the materials most commonly used in collections care, the methods of production, and their disposition at the end of their useful life. My original goals included full examination and summary of the environmental consequences of the early product lifecycle during harvest and manufacture. This intent changed to a cursory review of the forest product and petrochemical processes due to time constraints and my lack of scientific background. This change in scope allowed me to narrow the focus to the environmental issues found to be most important to the collections care community.
