Abstract

In the United States, the Non-Profit Sector encompasses over one million organizations who often vie for the same federal and state funding that is rapidly decreasing. As a result of the increasing number of nonprofit organizations (NPO's) and the decreasing amount of money available to support these organizations, only the best and most effective nonprofits will survive. To support these effective nonprofits, major grant providers are requiring their grantees to receive technical assistance and resources to build organizational capacity. Although these grant requirements are beneficial to both the organization and the consultants that work with them, NPO's come with a distinct structure and culture. Given this, consultants must approach their work with them differently than if they were working with a for profit organization. This study explored the ways in which organization development consultants can work more effectively with nonprofit organizations to build their internal capacity to be self-sufficient.
