Abstract
This study explores the deliberate teaching of self-awareness in the classroom as a foundational element of Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Specifically, it examines how explicit instruction in self-awareness through theatre arts can enhance emotional literacy among youth in grades six through nine. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through teacher interviews, classroom observations, pre- and post-surveys, and reflective journals. The research investigates the benefits of integrating theatrical methods into SEL instruction, techniques for effective implementation, and the critical role of emotional literacy in adolescent development. While the findings did not conclusively determine whether students retain SEL skills long-term or become lifelong learners, the results indicate that students who participated in active, gamified theatre-based lessons demonstrated increased emotional recognition, empathy, collaboration, and the ability to build positive relationships. These findings suggest that theatre arts provide a dynamic and engaging framework for teaching self-awareness and fostering social-emotional growth in middle school students.
