Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the use of music in today's therapeutic culture and, specifically, how it is utilized in depressed states. Research revealed that the value of music for human development has been recognized since, literally, the beginning of time. It is mentioned in the Bible and talked about in many ancient writings. Music is an integral part of music therapy and plays a significant role in other therapeutic disciplines such as dance, movement, and expressive arts therapy. Music is used in hospitals to facilitate healing. Put simply, music has been found to relieve stress. In so doing, it advances patient healing without the} excessive use of medication. The methodology of the thesis involved 14 participants in a half-day workshop. They listened to music and performed musically, on a variety of percussion instruments. Pre- and post-tests were administered to ascertain whether there had been any significant change as a result of this musical experience.
