Abstract
This Master's Project concerns collections care when television or motion picture filmmakers use a museum or historic property as a location for filming. The project's goal is to provide the reader with pertinent background information about film technology, museums and historic sites, and film production at cultural and historical locations, and address some of the collections care issues that arise when film crews are permitted to work in museums or at historic properties. These issues include radiant heat and ultraviolet output from studio lighting, and concerns regarding special effects chemicals and machinery, such as wind and fogging machines. In addition, the protection of facilities including grounds, during filmmaking, is another area that is discussed. The project treats the museum building itself as an artifact, especially in the cases of historic house museums and historic sites, and addresses facilities issues pertinent to the subject. Finally, the project covers some of the security and safety issues that are unique to film production in museums.
