Abstract
As previously stated, the contention of this thesis is that if a self-guide is to be an effective educational tool, it must primarily serve to focus the visitors' attention on the works of art, providing both visual and extended contexts for those works. Accordingly, the primary objective of the self-guide used in this case study was to serve as an aid to viewing works by Matisse by focusing the visitors on the works, therefore prompting interaction between the visitors and the works. The guide attempts to do this by encouraging visitors to confront each work as a whole, pointing out distinct visual elements that work toward the total effect of the artwork, encouraging visual cognition, reinforcing the viewing experience with a visual art vocabulary, and providing a cultural historical context for the works.
