Abstract

This study was prompted by the need to induce adults to look at art, particularly modern art, as the prime focus for a museum education program. My method is based on the premise that the longer people look at art objects, the more they will perceive them in terms of their aesthetic qualities, relationship of forms, use of color, spatial elements, etc. These attributes are the key to visual interpretation of art, thus leading to greater understanding and appreciation. The first section of this paper is devoted to support of this viewpoint. The remainder of this thesis delineates the statement of my proposal: how do we induce the casual museum visitor to look at art?
