Abstract

This project explores the positive role children's museums can have on teens in their communities through youth programs. Within the structure of the youth programs and museums, teens can acquire and learn skills they need as they transition into adulthood. Furthermore, the master's project analyzes the current relationship between children's museum staff and teens, as well as the potential for children's museums to have an effective long-term impact on teens. The project addresses two important elements: How teens' participation in children's museums can enrich everyone in the institution including visitors, peers, museum staff, and, the board of trustees; How children's museum staff can develop mentor/ apprenticeship relationships with teens in the community. This project's product is a resource guide to increase understanding between teens and museum staff. Thus, museums can provide a place where adolescents develop into successful adults.
