Abstract

Research has recently revealed the affluent youth to be the new at-risk group. Affluent youth were found to have significantly high rates of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The route to psychological problems in affluent youth was found to be related to two parental factors: achievement pressure and isolation from parents. The purpose of this project was to develop a prevention intervention for at-risk youth by exploring potential parental factors in early childhood that may precipitate those found in adolescence. As a step towards preventing psychological distress in affluent youth, a psychoeducational workshop was designed to raise parent's awareness of the risk factors for affluent children. The workshop is geared toward parents with toddlers and preschool age children to aim for early intervention and deterrence of contributing parental factors. Future research would be important to explore more thoroughly these critical parental factors in early childhood, as well as to create a follow-up parent training series or parental support psychotherapy group.
