Abstract
This master's project explores the phenomenon of immersive exhibitions in natural history and science museums in the United States. The purpose of this project is to define what constitutes an immersive exhibition and investigate why these exhibitions are being developed in increasing numbers. By researching which natural history and science museums are developing immersive exhibitions and analyzing how and under what circumstances they are developed, this master's project uncovers the benefits and problems involved with designing these exhibitions. The recommendations stemming from this investigation provide natural history and science museum professionals with a gauge for determining whether or not immersive exhibitions are an appropriate exhibition strategy for their museum and audience needs. This project culminates in a session proposal for the American Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) 2001 conference, and an article for the journal Exhibitionist. Both set out parameters of what constitutes an immersive exhibition, discusses why exhibitors are increasingly using the technique, and offers recommendations to exhibitors based on the findings and conclusions of this project.
