Abstract
My thesis is an exploration into these various approaches in order to clarify some of the issues involved. Toward this end, I have defined three broad areas which seem to provide distinctive approaches to self-regulation. These can be seen as separate models although they have much in common and cannot be clearly separated. Each of these three models - behavioral medicine, holistic health, and mysticism - embody a unique approach for promoting self-regulation, each with its own rationale and methodologies, yet broadly overlapping. Although there are many common themes, each is rooted in basic underlying assumptions that differ and each works toward different ends. In each model, the approach to self regulation has developed along different lines, with attitudes and modalities in accord with the framework from which it is viewed.
