Abstract

The purpose of the project is to explore the current state and future prospects of wildlife dioramas in natural history museums in the United States. This project assesses the arguments of those writers who question the continued relevance of dioramas, analyzing both their historical development and their contemporary interpretation. Through the synthesis of wide-ranging opinions of dioramas, this project lays the groundwork for new directions in the underlying philosophy and physical form of this type of display. Its product is a reader of articles related to wildlife dioramas, with annotations and discussion questions for an exhibit team that is working on a diorama-related project.
