Abstract
My master's project research sought to accomplish six objectives. The first two objectives involved examining the history of the Mexican museum, Mexican cultural policies, and political and economic changes that have occurred in Mexico in the last fifteen years. The first two objectives led me into the history of funding in Mexican museums as well as to define and clarify NAFTA and its contribution to the new artistic movement in Mexico and how some of the NAFTA regulations have affected traveling exhibitions to U.S. museums. Three further objectives involved investigating the extent to which Mexican contemporary art exhibitions have been mounted in the U.S., the type of funding received for traveling Mexican art exhibitions originating in Mexico, and the challenges involved in bringing a traveling Mexican art exhibition from Mexico. These objectives were investigated through surveys sent to U.S. art museums and interviews with art museum professionals in the U.S. and Mexico. Finally, to fulfill all my objectives, I researched three Mexican corporate funders and their policies on Mexican contemporary art as well as conducted two case studies of recent traveling Mexican contemporary art exhibitions in the U.S.
