Abstract

This master's project examines existing cultural protection treaties and international agreements pertaining to international trade in art in the U.S. and Europe. Its purpose is to allow collections managers in art museums in the U.S. to foresee the hazards of acquiring art objects with little or no provenance as well as to respond to art theft in his/her institution. Further, examination of the recent art theft cases re-enforces the importance of a proper documentation of art objects.
