Abstract

Colonization and oppression are heavily involved in the history of the Philippines. Consequently, colonial legacies are deeply ingrained in Filipino culture and society. This project highlights how colonial impacts persist intergenerationally, continuing to influence the experiences of second generation Filipino Canadians. Insights from the literature review are outlined in a handout for counsellors. This handout intends to educate counsellors about the present-day impacts of colonialism on second generation Canadians and to promote a decolonized approach to counselling practice. This capstone emphasizes the importance for counsellors to recognize the present impacts of colonialism for this demographic and highlights the significance of cultural competence in counselling practice.
