Abstract
This thesis addresses the challenge of presenting art as an effective tool for personal growth to self-directed learners. It also attempts to clarify the needs and expectations of such learners for ongoing support and their relationship to a personal growth consultant. Over a six-week period, I presented three consecutive workshops on expressive arts and personal growth, emphasizing the themes of self-exploration and the enhancement of self-esteem through creative expression. I utilized both experiential and didactic approaches. I also made myself available for personal consultation and conducted final interviews at the close of the study period. My research and the enthusiastic reception of the study participants led me to the following conclusions: (1) Artistic expression can be an invaluable tool for personal growth; (2) There is a strong demand for ongoing support in the personal growth process; (3) This support can be provided by a "personal growth consultant." The role of such a consultant is to act as an encourager and supporter of self-directed individuals meeting challenges in personal growth.
