Abstract
This master's thesis explores various issues currently surrounding digital badging, including: the current state of digital badging, the potential benefits digital badging can provide, how different organizations are utilizing badging, the challenges badge programs pose, and where badges may be going in the future. Based upon my research in these areas, I have concluded that digital badges have the potential to offer a number of significant benefits to museums. They could potentially work to highlight audience member learning that is often unrecognized and allow participants to share the learning in other settings. Badges may also motivate deeper learning and engagement with museum offerings. However, the relative novelty of badges, the lack of established best practices, the slow adoption of badges by the mainstream, and the resources and planning required, make the prospect of most museums developing their own badge programs prohibitive at this time.
