Abstract
A large financial services company in the San Francisco area has been carrying out an El training program using the Emotional Competencies Model, which includes four areas: self-awareness, self-assessment, social-awareness, and relationship management. The Technical Mentoring Program (TMP)' has been running for fourteen years. Seventeen sessions had been carried out in that time of the research, and TMP 17 was the session observed by the researcher. Each TMP session included approximately 40-50 people. Eight to ten individuals acted as mentors for teams of three to five protégés.
There were two goals for each participant in TMF: 1) to research and present a solution to a technical problem within the organization effectively and 2) to learn enough about oneself and others to be able to work more effectively within the organization. The first goal was assessed through the response of senior management to the presentations. The second goal was assessed through participant self-reported evaluations and anecdotally through conversations with trainers.
