Abstract
This master's project focuses on how museums as collecting institutions stretch traditional parameters in using financial proceeds from deaccessioning, by allocating them for purposes other than acquisitions. The purpose of this project is to report on the current state of deaccessioning practices in terms of appropriation of proceeds, and to examine the ethical and legal ramifications of using deaccession proceeds for purposes other than acquisition, the appropriation generally accepted in the museum field.
An increasing number of museums in recent years have challenged the boundaries of professional deaccessioning guidelines, and used these proceeds for care of collections. By analyzing three cases where institutions in the United States have used deaccession proceeds for non-acquisition purposes, the project investigates what factors are involved in going beyond traditional guidelines, how the decisions to do so were made, and how these museums justify their actions. This project proposes appropriate parameters that conform to professional ethics, legal standards and financial realities.
