Abstract

Far West Masters Ski Racers (N = 94, 67 males and 27 females), ages 25 to 73, responded to a questionnaire that examined the importance of psychological strategies and the role that they play in the performance of the skier. Frequency scores by percent were used to analyze the responses, which indicated what psychological skills were important to the skier's performance. Significant percentages were found to exist in the questionnaire's sections of: self-perception, mental preparation prior to competition, experience of anxiety, coping with anxiety, and relationships to performance. Based upon the findings of this study, the development of mental strategies may effectively enhance the Masters skier's performance. Also, from this, the opportunity for systematic mental training programs for skiers may be created.
