Abstract
This research provides the foundation for the analysis and recommendations to museum directors, funders, ASTC, and YMPs concerning the best practices in attracting, engaging, and retaining Millennials as professional employees who contribute their work to the mission of the museum. Issues addressed include the lack of career pathways in the field, low compensation, YMPs' professional development needs, and strategies for overcoming generational differences in the workplace.
An important limitation of this project is that this research took place amidst the world-wide economic recession which began in 2008. The implications of whether this recession and the weak job market affect my data cannot be determined at this time. From 2008 to 2009 there was an 11% increase in the number of young college graduates working for nonprofit organizations (Rampell, 2011). Data such as this indicates that the recession may help nonprofits attract young workers, but only time will tell if they are able to retain them when the job market bounces back.
